Meet “Big Bertha and the Green Machine”

In this session you will hear about how Nebraska Furniture Mart, a legendary retail store implemented TWI Job Instruction. The session will provide details of not only what went into the planning, strategy, outside the box thinking, team building, but the results and lessons learned as well. Starting in 2009 Nebraska Furniture Mart started its journey on becoming a Lean Culture and an Operations Excellence Team was created. The team identified that standardized on the job training between current store locations is essential to the current and future success of the company. As a result TWI has played a large factor in enabling the company to open a new store location in 2015 that will employ 2000 new staff members. Implementing TWI at Nebraska Furniture Mart has created a playbook for training new and current staff that has had a positive impact on employees and the company’s success.

About the Presenter(s)

David Welch is an Operations Excellence Trainer for Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, Nebraska. Nebraska Furniture Mart is a Berkshire Hathaway company and is the largest home furnishing store in the United States. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Bachelor of Science in Education and has received a Lean Manufacturing Certificate from University of Nebraska at Omaha. During his career he has been involved with organizational design and development, operations training, leadership development and coaching, project management, consulting, and facilitating lean events. In early 2011 David, designed and executed an implementation plan for TWI Job Instruction at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Dave is currently managing the TWI initiative for Nebraska Furniture Mart.
